Freddie James began his journey on October 16, 1937 in Parks, Arkansas. He was the son of the late Fred Abernathy and Mary M. Nicholson Squalls Abernathy. He departed this life on August 25, 2022 surrounded by his family, in Decatur, AL.
Freddie was employed at Fruehauf Trailer Company for seven years. When the plant became a Union, he became a Shop Steward where he helped organized a Credit Union and became a loan officer. He was hired by the Union as an International Representative for the AFL-CIO for 23 years. He retired in 1994 and started a Pressure Washing Business, “Freddie Abernathy’s “Good Ole House & Driveway Washing Service”.
Brother Abernathy was active in civic and fraternal organizations: A member of the Keystone Lodge No. 40 Masonic Lodge, Tennessee Valley Consistory #160, the Al Azhar Shriner Temple #195 and a member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter #542.
Mr. Abernathy was preceded in death by: his parents, two children, Ray Charles Abernathy, Freddie Abernathy, Jr. and one grandson, Michael Moody.
He leaves to cherish his memory: a devoted and loving wife of 61 years, Vera D. Shackelford Abernathy; one loving sister, Mattie Mae Squalls, Wynne, Arkansas; four daughters, Vickey Abernathy and Viola Abernathy, both of Decatur, AL; Jacquline A. Vinson; Oxford, MS; Cynthia A. Tate, Huntsville, AL; and one son, Fredrick G. Abernathy (Ann), Courtland, AL; 14 grandchildren, whom he truly adored; Rodrick Adair, Lakeshia Jones (Kendrick), Corey Abernathy, Ashley Strong (Andrew), Laurice Martinez (AJ), Jameelah Muhammad, Christina Muhammad, Kenethia Imaghodor (Osasere), India Abernathy, Candace Vinson, Alex Vinson, James Vinson, Zaria Abernathy, and Fredrick Abernathy, Jr.; Nine Great Grands, One Great-Great Grand. Three special daughters; Johnnie Mae Booker, Brenda Adair Sanders and Summer Cross; and a host of other relatives and friends.
