Dawn Stevens, a longtime resident of Indian River Club of Rockledge, Florida, died on September 26, 2020
due to cancer and she went peacefully in her sleep. Like a wave dying out, it merely maintains being water,
Dawn Steven’s death is a passage with God, and her spirit will join the angels in heaven to watch over those
dear to her heart. Dawn Land Hardy Stevens was one of those rare people whose enthusiasm for life was contagious. She loved engaging in projects and supporting her community. She loved being with people,
which was shown by how carefully she listened to others and how generously she shared her company.
She partied with the best of them and was sympathetic to the sorrows of those she loved. As challenging as
life got at times, she had the strength, courage, and perseverance to live life to the fullest! She was a
tough cookie on the outside and had a heart of gold on the inside. If you knew her, she was a joy to be around.
Her knowing led her to share that “God had punched her last dance card” when she shared her story with others. She was a solid Christian woman. As Dawn says, “And it’s been a good ride!”
Dawn came into the world on May 25, 1941, in Danville, Virginia. She was the first child of Lt Col. Julian Daniel
and Hazel Dawn Land Hardy. She was raised as an Army Brat and attended 19 different schools to complete
her high school education with tours in Germany and Japan, as well as various U.S.
big sister to her brother Danny Hardy, As the oldest child, Dawn was a central person for bringing family
together. Dawn was famous for calling and talking for an hour at a time. As with most of the things she did,
her work benefitted others. Dawn graduated from the LSU School of Banking with her
AIB Certificate in Banking. She enjoyed a career in banking, which led her to become a Vice-President
of The First Bank of Rockledge. A woman becoming a Vice-President in banking was a landmark
accomplishment in the ’70s!
Dawn friended and empathized with a vast array of people and personality types, which gave her the gift
of a diverse group of friends and acquaintances. Dawn was proud to have settled in Rockledge in 1966
and called it her home. On August 13, 1967, Dawn met Harold Stevens, who became the love of her life.
After many attempts, Harold finally encouraged Dawn to become his wife on June 8, 1968. They enjoyed
playing tennis, traveling, dancing, and treasuring each other’s company and family. Dawn loved Harold
greatly. She enjoyed his sense of humor, handyman talents, hardworking ethics, and his willingness to
help others. They celebrated their 50th Anniversary on June 8, 2018 surrounded by family and friends in
Linville, North Carolina.
Dawn’s love of people led her to volunteer. She was very creative with planning, organizational skills,
and great at rallying support, which made her a real asset to the organizations she gave her time to. Dawn
and her husband, Harold, were founders of the Girls Fastpitch Softball teams and Girls Junior League
Tennis teams in Rockledge. Through their efforts they developed a love of sports for juniors in the county.
They were instrumental in building the softball fields and the Har-Tru Tennis courts at Rockledge Park.
Dawn was a loving Wife, Mother, Sister, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother. She is survived by her loving husband, Harold, her daughter Dr. Stacy L. M. McDonald, her brother and his wife Danny and Ann Hardy, nephews Jason and John Hardy, and cousins Dinah Douglas, Patti Heilig, and Steve Land. She loved her six grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
