Lt. David R. Potts (Retired), 63, of Belton.

Lt. Potts was born June 26, 1956 in Belton, the son of Arthur Neale Potts Sr. and Dorothy Jane Daniel Potts. He married Sheila Alexander, May 26, 2011.

He had a heart for public service from a young age.  He served as one of the first Belton  Junior Fireman while he was in high school as an ambulance driver.  He was a 1974 graduate of Belton High School.  Lt. Potts first worked for the Belton Fire Department after high school graduation as a fireman and EMS. He received Fireman EMS of the year while working for the department. He attended Temple Junior College and received his police certification from Central Texas College in Killeen. He began his career in law enforcement in 1979 for the Belton Police Department.   In 1985, he moved to the Bell County Sheriff’s Department under Sheriff Dan Smith. David had an intuition for searching out crime.  He was with the Sheriff’s department for 28 years, where he received many awards including the Sheriff’s award in 2012. He retired in 2013.

He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially running trot lines with his sons. He would go out of his way to help anyone whenever possible.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife, Sheila, on January 9, 2019.

Survivors include two sons David Roy Potts, Jr of Troy and Arthur Daniel Potts (Chloe Potts) of Austin; two brothers Neale Potts (Debbie Potts) of Belton and Terry Potts (Andrea Potts) of Salado; three grandchildren Makenna Nicole Potts, Brody Roy Potts, and Adeline Day Potts.
