Dave was born June 26, 1945. He was the third son of a hospital pharmacist and homemaker in Sioux Falls South Dakota. Dave’s favorite memories of his childhood were his worm sales business, and his special relationship with his Grandpa and Grandma Sayles who operated a creamery and made local deliveries with an ice truck. Dave lost them at the age of 12 and spoke fondly of them his entire life.
Dave met his best lifelong friend Dave “Daver” Luymes in junior high. Dave Luymes called Dave Werner “Wein”. Dave spent a lot of time with the Luymes family especially at their lake house in Big Stone, SD where his love for the water began. The two Dave’s high school high jinx had them playing cat and mouse with the police, fleeing from pasture parties, and sneaking into the drive-in.
Dave went to college at Sioux Falls State College where he played football. The high jinx continued in college when Dave and some friends broke into the chapel the night before a lecture and set an alarm clock on a rope with ladies underwear attached. In the middle of the lecture the alarm clock rang and the rope swung back and forth from the rafters blaring and waving the women’s panties like a flag.
White at college, Dave met Anita DeBoer. After marrying in the spring of 1965 they moved to Iowa where Dave learned to become a mainframe computer operator. Iowa was where they had their son named Vince David. In 1966 they settled in Whittier California where their daughter Julia was born. Dave worked three jobs in order to provide for his family.
In 1970 they moved to Pierre, SD where they lived in the country and Vince and Julia went to a one room schoolhouse. Dave and Anita held multiple jobs and provided a home to over 60 foster children. One life long relationship from this time was with foster daughter Kathy Edwards who Dave treated as his own.
After a move to Carrollton, TX in 1980 Dave and Anita’s marriage ended.
Dave and Meg had a weekend marriage celebration in Loveland Colorado on New Years Eve of 1989. They rented the Wagon Wheel hotel and everyone enjoyed hayrides, a New Year’s eve party and Dave’s cooking.
In 1990 they founded a successful business, Information Partners where Dave was a COBOL programmer. In 1994 they decided to leave the city life behind and move to the pastoral beauty of Elizabeth, Colorado where the family resides today.
1996 was a big year for the Werners. Dave formally adopted Robyn and they fulfilled a dream by buying a house in Ender’s Nebraska as well as purchasing a ski boat. There are countless family memories of fun days at Enders Reservoir including Dave’s legendary boat driving ability of tossing people off the inner tube. While Dave enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, he was truly at home on the water.
Dave enjoyed many activities with his grandkids such as; bedtime stories, tea parties, playing games (Battleship, Play Store), four wheeling, snowmobiling, county fairs, pumpkin patches and cooking just to name a few.
Five things that would characterize Dave Werner are; Salem Menthol Cigarettes, Solitaire, a Drake Mallard, his 1978 Chevy Short Bed Truck and his faith.
Dave went to be with Jesus peacefully in his sleep at home surrounded by family on August 15th 2021. He is survived by his wife Meg, and children Vince, Julia, Robyn and Kathy.
