David K. Silhanek, 76, of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 2, 2012. He was the husband of Martha Silhanek, to whom he was married for 3 years. Born in Tama, Iowa, David was the son of the late Joe and Eleanor Silhanek, and was raised in Oak Park, IL. David received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University, his Masters degree from the University of Michigan and his PhD in Classics from New York University. He was honored with a Fulbright grant to study at the American Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, and is the author of a translation of The Iliad and Aeneid. David also proudly served in the US Marine Corps. He taught Latin at Moravian Academy in Bethlehem, and then finished his teaching career at Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, New Hampshire. He enjoyed coaching baseball, basketball and football while at those schools. A true believer in giving back to his community and his country, upon his retirement he served two years in the Peace Corps in Kazakhstan teaching English. He was a dedicated member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. His passions were sports (a member of the Red Sawx Nation) and reading. He was the beloved husband of Martha; and the beloved father to son Kent and his wife Robin, and daughter, Alison; and to his grandsons, Connor and Grant; and his brother, Jay and wife Diane, nephew, Tom and niece, Kimberly; as well as his first wife, Andie. Survivors: wife Martha; son Kent Silhanek and his wife Robin; daughter, Alison Silhanek; grandsons, Connor and Grant; brother, Jay Silhanek and his wife Diane; nephew, Tom and niece, Kimberly; and his first wife, Andie.
