David Albert Jones, 85, was born in Bluefield, W. Va., to the late David Harradon Jones and Ruth Coleman Jones. He grew up first in Omar, then in Oak Hill, W. Va. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil and sanitary engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now called Virginia Tech). While there he met Greta Gray Griffin on a blind date. They married in 1953, and enjoyed 63 years of love and devotion. Dave joined the Air Force in 1955, and moved with Greta and baby Linda Susan to Patrick Air Force Base, Florida, where daughter Rebecca Leigh was born. He was stationed in Nagoya, Japan in 1956. In 1961, the family would return to Florida, where David worked first as a Chief Chemist at Cape Kennedy Air Force Station, and then as Head of Sanitary Engineering for Pan American World Airways, from 1963-1969.
David saw the world through the eyes of an engineer. He was a tinkerer, whose hobbies included repairing radios, lamps, and appliances, and building projects in his workshop. He could build anything you needed, from a bookcase to a pair of stilts.
David felt deeply, richly blessed in his 63-year marriage to Greta Griffin Jones. He missed her terribly after she passed away in October 2016; now they are reunited. David is survived by daughters Linda Perez (Mike), Rebecca Burns (Steve), and Patricia Steinfeld (Laurence); grandsons Ryan David Burns (Heather), Michael David Perez (Christine), Matthew Perez, Owen Burns, Ethan Steinfeld, William Steinfeld; granddaughter Caroline Burns; and three great-grandchildren: Olivia and Ellie Burns, and Michael Perez.
