Colonel N. David Jarrell March 22, 1938 – March 20, 2016
BOERNE — Norman David Jarrell passed away peacefully in Boerne, Texas, surrounded by his family, two days before his 78th birthday and was immediately whisked into the presence of God. David was born in Temple, Texas, to the late Dr. Norman D. Jarrell and Nannette Kahn Jarrell on March 22, 1938. He grew up in Texas City and after graduating from high school in 1956 he attended New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, NM. In 1958, David transferred to the University of Texas in Austin. Since his two years at junior college were not co-ed, he had high hopes of charming the girls on UT’s campus. During a much anticipated first fraternity-sorority party of the year, he met his wife-to-be, Faye Ellis, and they were soon engaged and then married in 1960. David earned his undergraduate degree in psychology at the Univ. of Texas, and later a master’s degree in criminology at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. He was named a Distinguished ROTC Student in college. In 1961 he was commissioned as a Second Lt. and chose to join the Army. Their first duty station was in Hawaii where their first son, Scott, was born. Two years later, another son, Matthew, was born at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. David proudly served his country for twenty five years. Moving around the world fourteen times, he fought in the Vietnam War and was the MP Battalion Commander in Mannheim, Germany. After retiring from the Army with the rank of Colonel, the family moved to San Antonio, TX, where he worked as a financial advisor for First Command Financial Services. Retiring and moving to the Hill Country was a dream which came true for David and Faye. In 1999 they built their home on eight acres in Boerne, TX, just a stone’s throw from the Guadalupe River. And there, besides clearing their property, playing golf, traveling to Pearland and Plano to see their grandkids, volunteering every week at Patrick Heath Library, volunteering at Hill Country Daily Bread and Hill Country Mission for Health, and enjoying wonderful friends at River Mountain Ranch, David happily began another “tour of duty” – this time serving Christ. He and Faye joined First United Methodist Church in Boerne where he loved helping others come to Jesus Christ. He particularly enjoyed serving on teams for Walk to Emmaus. David found many ways to serve God: Chairman of the Administrative Board of FUMC, Church Treasurer, Faith in Action Chair, Financial Peace coordinator, Foundational co-leader of Lifeline Tutoring, and a faithful member of numerous committees and Sunday School.David is survived by his wife of 55 years, Faye, two loving sons: Scott Jarrell (Karen) of Plano and Matthew Jarrell (Christy) of Pearland. Survivors also include two sisters Gene Heidrich (Art) from Florida, and Jane Pickett (Bud) from Kerrville and one brother, Donald Jarrell (Jona) of California. He leaves behind four grandchildren, Brandon Lillie, Benjamin Jarrell, Catherine Jarrell, and Jillian Jarrell.
