David Lorenzo Holyfield was born on September 30, 1929 in Decatur, Alabama to the late Owen “Orange” Holyfield and Helen Smitherman-Holyfield.
David completed his primary and secondary education in the Decatur School System completing his education at Lakeside High School. After completing High school, David enlisted in the United States Army where he served on active duty from 1950 to 1954. David served in the Army Reserves from 1954 to 1957, and was awarded the Bronze Star.
David was employed at State Bonded Warehouse as a foreman from 1956 to his retirement in 1996. David remained actively employed in various capacities after his retirement.
David joined the Moulton Heights Church of Christ in 1990 where he remained a faithful member until his death. He departed this life on March 28, 2016.
David was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. He was trustworthy and a confidante to many.
He was preceded in death by: daughters, Cathy and Barbara Holyfield; two brothers, Murphy and Gene Holyfield, three sisters, Elizabeth Hollaway, Lucille Horton and Margarette Jefferson.
He leaves to cherish his memory: a loving wife, Nellie Mae Holyfield; four sons, David Holyfield Jr., Christopher Holyfield, Rickey Bates and Jerald Langford; nine daughters, Agnes Fuqua, Vivian Holyfield, Helen Holyfield, Nita McGee, Joyce Taylor, Peggie Langford, Evelyn Rice, Abby Bates, and Monica Strong all of Decatur, Alabama. He also leaves behind to mourn his passing his sisters-in-law, Ollie Surles and Bernice Bates; two brothers-in-law, Bill Jefferson of Orlando, Florida and Charlie Bates of Decatur, Alabama and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
