On Wednesday, October 14, 2020, David Patrick, devoted husband, and father died at the age of 41. David was born July 28, 1979, in Vicksburg, MS to Tim and Judy Patrick. He attended the University of Mobile and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. On June 8, 2002, he married Erica Smith of Northport, AL. They had three children, Elijah, Auburn Grace and Evy.
David’s life was committed to one pursuit – knowing Jesus and making his love known to other people. This life pursuit began in his home where David gave himself daily to loving and serving his wife and children “as Jesus loved the church and gave himself for her.” One could set their clock by the punctuality with which he made eggs and coffee for Erica each morning. Daily, he created space for Erica to have undisturbed time for herself. Passing by their home at night, one was likely to hear David laughing and singing with his children as he tucked them into bed. He could often be found outdoors with Elijah, undistracted by other to-do lists or “needs of the day.” He was wholly present for his family. David was carried by a selfless ambition to care for other people. Compelled by the love of Jesus, and sharing the same life pursuit, David and Erica served as missionaries in East Asia.
David’s death is a tragedy, but his life is a narrative of self-giving love. We grieve the death of a husband, father, son, brother, and friend. We celebrate the life of one who gave himself so completely for the glory of God and the good of other people.
