David Gordon Woods, Sr. of Akron, AL passed away on June 17, 2021 at the age of 88 at Hospice of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL.
David Gordon Woods, Sr. was born in Akron, AL on November 25, 1932 on Thanksgiving Day. He served in the United States Army National Guard prior to being drafted to active duty in the Korean War. He served for four years and was honorably discharged in 1952. He worked for Reichhold Chemical for 34 years in addition to Soil Conservation and the Auburn Fish Farming Center. He was a treasured member of Mount Hebron Baptist Church where he sang frequently as a featured soloist and choir member and served as a deacon.
Gordon was a bold spirit who greeted everyone he met with warmth. He was known for telling everyone, including new guests to his home and strangers alike, that he loved them. He was a charmer who possessed the ability to win over anyone who came into contact with him. He had a beautiful voice that could move a congregation to tears. He enjoyed gardening, beekeeping, fishing, talking on the phone to his friends, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and riding in his signature old red truck.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty Joyce Woods of Akron; sister Eunice Luna of Mobile; son Dr. Mark Anthony Woods of Tuscaloosa; daughter Betsy Woods Arrington of Greensboro (Rick); grandchildren Wesley Woods of Alabaster (Brittney), Nicole Woods Godwin of Tuscaloosa, Katie Woods Hawk of Columbia, TN (David), Mark Anthony Woods, Jr. of Nashville, TN (Rebekah), Hannah Grace Woods Hannigan of Monroeville (Drew), Erica Ashley Arrington of San Francisco, CA, Lloyd Richard Arrington, III of Tuscaloosa; great-grandchildren Scottie Godwin, Rett Godwin and Charlie Hannigan.
He is preceded in death by father Dewey Franklin Woods, mother Mamie Clara Bamberg Woods, son David Gordon Woods, Jr., granddaughter Kimberly Ann Woods, and brothers Albartus Woods, Lafayette Woods, Herbert Woods, Leland Woods, and Jack Woods.
