David Carl Carstens finished his cancer battle and joined his Heavenly Father, December 8, 2013. Dave was born January 5, 1952 in Loup City, Nebraska to Daryl and Gladys Carstens. He came in at a whopping 4 lbs. 14 oz., and was the first baby born in the county that year, so his parents received many gifts in his honor. Before finally settling in Canon City, the family traveled throughout the Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado areas with Daryl’s job. Dave graduated from CCHS in 1970, where he was active in the International Relations Club and the Voice of Youth. In 1971, Dave joined the first square dance lesson class for the Royal Gorge Promenades Square Dance Club. That’s where he met Sharon Heckard. They were united in marriage on May 11, 1974. The couple was blessed with two children, Michelle on May 29, 1977 and Melissa on May 8, 1980. Dave worked for the Royal Gorge Bridge Co., the Colorado State Fair, and other numerous jobs before starting with Wal-mart. He was one of the first employees, helping during set-up and the opening of the store. He wore his “MR FIX IT” badge proudly. After retiring from Wal-mart, Dave became the maintenance man for the Royal Gorge Manor, a job he thoroughly enjoyed until his passing. Dave was an active member of the Odd Fellows, locally and at the State level. He belonged to the Fremont Odd-Fellows Lodge, Salome Rebekah Lodge, Canon Canton, Waldo Encampment, and was Echo Theta Rho’ honorary dad. He was serving on the Jurisdictional Youth Committee and loved all the youth of the order. He always said he was the oldest living teenager.
