David B. Karkowski, Sr., age 74, of Plymouth, formerly of South Windsor, CT, passed away on Thursday, September 2nd, at the BID Hospital in Boston. He was the devoted husband of Constance (Starr) Karkowski. Loving father of Brian (Rudy) Karkowski and his wife Paulette Phlipot, and Lynn Lake and her husband Jason. Dave was the grandfather of Courtney Lake, Brody Lake, and Cassidy Karkowski. He is also survived by his sister Robin Bridges and many cherished nieces and was born in Springfield MA on November 5, 1946, son of the late Albert (Benney) and Eleanor Karkowski. He attended South Windsor High School where he met his loving wife of 54 years. He graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology, earning his electrical engineering degree. Dave was a compassionate entrepreneur who never tired. New challenges were his biggest motivation. He consistently developed new products in the toy and game business, driven by his desire to have his children play classic wooden games instead of video games. His successes began when he sold his first hand crafted wooden box filled with marbles to the Smithsonian Institute’s store. This spearheaded many more achievements with his companies, Essex Wood Products and The Great American Trading Company along with the wide array of other productive businesses and hobbies he pursued. He did not experience life sitting down. He was calm, yet pursued passions fiercely doing whatever it took to see a project through including the restoration of many English sports cars, including MGs, Morgans, Austin Healeys, and Jaguars. Dave loved building just about anything, especially putting his skills to work on home remodeling was never afraid to learn something new. His keen ability to understand how things work enabled him to conquer whatever he set his sights on. He did not hesitate to help someone out and jumped into any thought, project, or experience 110%. His neighbors, friends and family benefited from the fruits of his labor, talent and dedication.
