BARKHAMSTED – The gates of Heaven opened on January 17, 2020 to welcome David A. Sweeney, 85, home. He was the loving, loyal and proud husband of BettyAnn for over 56 years. He was also a kind, considerate gentleman and always found good in everyone. He was born February 8, 1934 in Bristol; the son of the late David W. and Ebba (Olson) Sweeney. Dave proudly served our country in the U.S. Army and five years in the Army Reserves. He graduated from Bristol High School, received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees of Science from Central CT State University and his sixth year of Study from Saint Joseph College. On August 3, 1963, Dave and BettyAnn began a 56 year marriage that she describes as “too short a walk with my bestfriend.” He started his Chemistry teaching career at Canton High in 1963 and retired from there in 1992. Teaching was his happiest vocation. He worked at Moore and Alvord Real Estate for a few years during retirement. His retirement was wonderful. Each year they planned an annual trip abroad, in the U.S.A., Canada, cruise, etc., and also each fall was spent in Florida for a few weeks. Dave spent many days and hours fishing in local rivers and lakes. He was an excellent fly fisherman and taught many people not only fly fishing but instruction in flies. He was unselfish in passing his techniques of the sport on to others and gave away many flies. He loved nature which is quite evident as in where he lived in beautiful wooded Barkhamsted.
