Darryl Evan Northbird, age 58, “Miskwaanakwad” which means “Red Cloud” of the Migizi Indoodem (Eagle Clan) and Cass Lake, Minnesota journeyed to the spirit world from his home on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2021. He was born in Cass Lake, MN on October 26th, 1963, to Suzanne and Jerry Lee Northbird, Sr.
Darryl made the decision at a young age, seven years old, to follow the Red Road Path and he never waivered from that decision. He enjoyed playing the flute, traditional drum, and singing, Darryl was blessed with a beautiful voice. He enjoyed traveling to Pow Wow’s, fishing, ricing, spending time with his grandkids, teaching his kids and grandkids how to cook, and was passionate about the teaching and passing on of traditions in the family. He was always teaching everyone that it is alright to be themselves, to find themselves and to be comfortable with who they are, stand up for what you believe.
Darryl is welcomed to the spirit world by his dad, Jerry Lee Northbird, Sr.; daughter, Lynelle Northbird, grandparents, Adella and Louis Northbird; uncle, Louis “Ace” Northbird; aunties, Arlene and Melvina Northbird; and nephew, Byron Northbird.
He leaves behind his mother, Suzanne Northbird of Cass Lake, MN; sons, Lance Northbird of Fondu Lac, Chris Gahbow of Mille Lacs, Sterling Northbird of Geraldton, ON, Canada; daughters, Skye Northbird of Fondu Lac, Julia Rosebear of Bemidji, Arianna (Lawrence) Northbird of Fondu Lac, Devon Northbird of Bemidji, Allaurah Isham of Minneapolis, MN, Kylie Northbird of Bemidji, Amirah Northbird-White of Cass Lake, Brittany Northbird of Fondu Lac; brothers, Gerald Lee Northbird, Jr. of Cass Lake, Russell (Sharon) Northbird of Cass Lake, Steve Northbird of Minneapolis; sister, Teresa Persell of Bemidji; special auntie, Lois “Dolly” Northbird of Cass Lake; special uncle, Pat Northbird of Cass Lake; special friend, Rachel Harper of Bemidji; close family friend, Kaitlyn Grenier of Bemidji, 20 grandchildren and numerous other family members and friends.
