Darrell Phillip Hooten, age 87, of Bloomington, Indiana went to be with our Lord on Monday, May 20, 2019 at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
Darrell was born on June 27, 1931 in Bloomington to Chester Arnold and Bertha Alma (Sweeney) Hooten.
Darrell was a devoted Christian and attended Highland Faith Assembly of God in Bloomington. Darrell was proud to have served in the United States Navy from 1950 – 1953 in the Korean War, and was on the USS Ashtabula, a fueler, and the USS Stickell, a destroyer. Darrell was an officiator for the USS Ashtabula for veterans. He was a past Commander of the American Legion Burton Woolery Post 18 in Bloomington. Darrell loved playing his guitar and singing. He was a member of the Higher Ground Gospel Singers for 19 years with his wife, Arnetta Rayl and others. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, his golf cart, gardening and he loved his family. He was a local barber for many years in Bloomington at Hoot’s Barber Shop, and Franklin’s Barber Shop. Darrell loved telling jokes.
Darrell is survived by his wife, H. Arnetta Rayl of Bloomington, children, Steve Hooten (Tammi) of Bedford, IN, LaDonna Fisher (Lanny) of Bloomington, and Lucina Smith (Brian) of Willis, TX, step-children, Josh and Heather Rayl, grandchildren, Beverly Haggard, Kevin Hooten, Kyle Hooten, Sidney Sumrell, Casey Carpenter, Klint Hooten, Katelyn Hooten, Mia Smith, Alex Rayl, Kiah Rayl, and Violet Geduld, six great-grandchildren, and siblings, Marjorie Price and Suan Stine.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Zachary Carpenter, and brother, Cedric Hooten.
