Darlene Allen Slater, 89, passed away August 14, 2021, at her home, surrounded by family. She was born May 23, 1932, in Malad, Idaho. She was the daughter of Frances Duggan Allen and Iris Madeleine Hall. She attended Portage Elementary and graduated from Weber High School in Ogden, Utah.
She met the love of her life, Lynn Russell Slater, while roller skating at Berthana Roller Rink. They were married in Ogden, Utah on June 15, 1949. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on May 23, 1958. Darlene and Lynn spent their time together square dancing, bowling, camping, and traveling. They traveled to all 50 states. The last state on their list was Alaska, and their entire family joined them on that trip. They became snowbirds spending their winters in St. George.
Darlene worked at Smith’s Food King for 25 years. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, puzzles and word searches. Her handmade dishcloths were a coveted item amongst family members. She loved the color green which adorned her entire house and she would, almost always, be found wearing it. She had a unique gift with numbers and could tell you the birthday of every single family member from memory. (Including extended family, friends, and even family of family).
Family was Darlene’s greatest joy. She loved them unconditionally and was always aware of what was happening in each of their lives and helped everyone stay up to date on the other. She started the family’s love of Bear Lake where they spent many summers together and it became the spot of the biennial family reunion. Card games, specifically Nickels Down, was a family favorite and countless hours were spent sitting around playing, telling stories, laughing, and bonding. She was present at all family events being everyone’s biggest supporter, usually bringing along her famous chip dip. Family time was her favorite time, and she leaves a legacy of love and a tight-knit family unit.
Darlene was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She cherished being a member and loved sharing her beliefs with others. She led by example and put others first.
Darlene is survived by her husband of 72 years, Lynn, along with their four children: Terree (Dan) Brough, Dan (Bambi) Slater, Shelley Slater, and Christie (David) Bell, 18 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. Her siblings: Dennis (RaNeé) Allen, Cherie (Bruce) Burrows, Douglas Allen, and sister-in-law Carol Allen, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Covel Allen and great-granddaughter Kylee Dawn Slater.
