On Saturday, September 26, Colonel Daniel L. Lycan, 84, peacefully entered into eternity, surrounded by his loving family, after a short but valiant battle with cancer. Col. Lycan had a successful and distinguished military career spanning nearly three decades. Growing up in Decatur, IL, he went on to graduate from MIT in 1952, and entered the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers. Later he received a Masters of Science and Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Illinois. He was first stationed in Stuttgart, Germany where he met Alice, his wife of over 60 years. He was stationed at the Vicksburg Waterways Experiment Station as well as at the Presidio of San Francisco. He served two tours in Vietnam, worked with NASA on the space program, served as the Rock Island District Engineer and Director of the Engineering Topographic Laboratories at Ft. Belvoir. After retiring from the military in 1981, Col. Lycan served the communities of Prince William County, Stafford County, and Dumfries as the Director of Pubic Works.
