Daniel Joshua Carew “uncle Dan” as he is commonly known, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, October 19, 2016, at the age of 79. He was born on July 29, 1937 in Senehun/Taiama, Sierra Leone, the son of the late Joshua ‘GBandoma’ and Martha Carew. Uncle Dan grew up in Freetown, Sierra Leone, where he attended the Albert Academy Secondary School and the Technical Institute. He was awarded a scholarship to pursue a Mechanical Engineering Degree in the U.K.
He graduated at the top of his class and returned to Sierra Leone to work for UAC Motors as parts manager. He played an integral part as a member of the panel, on the radio show on SLBS “Foe Wheel En Two Foot”. After a long standing career at UAC Motors, he decided to pursue other interests.
He migrated to the United States in October 1986, where he was self-employed for a while, before pursing a career with the Prince George’s County Public School system in Maryland. His career was brought to an abrupt halt by a sudden and unexpected illness. Uncle Dan was always ready to give a helping hand and made an indelible mark in the lives of a lot of people, especially his family members.
Uncle Dan is survived by his wife Debra Cole; his children, Victoria Harleston, Victor Carew and Olayinka Eleady-Cole; his step-children, Leticia King, Ekudayo Pearce, Akieyomi Pearce, Akieola Pearce and Milton Lowe; his grand-children, Sulaiman, Malano, Keith, Hawa, Bryant, Victor jr, Ngozi, Donnelle, Cuthbert; his loving siblings, Marie KaiKai, David Carew esq, James Carew, Haja Marie Kuyateh, Elizabeth Kanu, Mabel Koroma, George Carew, Bartha Carew, Everett Carew; his sons-in-law, Donald and Dennis; several nieces and nephews including Dr Jimmy Carr, Alice Carew, Gbateh Carew, Dolly Buck, Fatu Yelenkeh, Joshua Kaikai, Comfort Kaikai, Manseray Young, Betty Songowah; his sisters-in-law Admire, Juanna Carew, and Marie Carew; several relatives includes The Carr family, The Carew/Kamara Kuyateh Family of Kholifa Mabang, The Buck Family, The Kamara Family of Yonibana, The Brewah and Gbappy Family, The Laggah Family, The KaiKai Family, The Yovoni and Pieh Family of Senehun/Taiama, The Ngegbeh’s/Paila’s/Gebeh Family; close friends include Witsun Ade-Cole Sr, Akitoye Akiwumi, Rev.
