Danial Lopez, 71, passed away surrounded by family at Alaska Regional Hospital on Nov. 22, 2019. Dan was known for his huge heart, dry humor, and a big smile.
Danial grew up in California as the third eldest of seven children. Danial Lopez is preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Ysirdo and Josephine Lopez; and brothers, David, and Joel Lopez. He is survived by his older brother, Ruben Lopez; sisters, Mary Rodriguez, Elizabeth Robinson, and Ruth Lopez; his beloved nieces, nephews, aunts, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Growing up in California with his siblings, Danial was the leader of fun, initiating crafts and games, a quality that followed him into adulthood. Danial would join the service, becoming a Paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division “Screaming Eagles” of the United States Army.
Danial served in the Vietnam War from ’67 to ’68 and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Upon leaving the military, he became a skilled carpenter and moved to join his brother, Ruben, in Alaska. There he met his best friend, Lynda McMahon. Dan happily lived with Lynda in Anchorage for the next 35 years, where they built a beautiful home, grew a beautiful garden, and enjoyed a big extended family. He supported all of his loved one’s endeavors, big or small; he was always ready to lend a hand and was seen cheering from the stands. Danial’s steadfast presence was felt within his families, imparting unto them the wisdom and experience from a full life. Danial was a loving, loyal and brave soldier, son, brother, friend, partner, father-figure, grandpa, and great-grandpa.
