Danappa (Dan) Channappa Kamoji died January 28, 2018 with his loving wife of 45 years, Linda Day Kamoji, holding his hand and singing “There’s Something About that Name” to him. Dan was born in Dharwad, India on July 26, 1939, the oldest of eight children. He loved education and encouraged his brothers and sisters to pursue education, urging them (and sometimes lining them up!) to study.
He was born into a Hindu family but was baptized in Sweden and outwardly professed his Christian faith. He had looked into Islam and Buddhism but had not found the answers he was looking for. He found the answer when he walked into a library in India, picked up a Bible for the very first time, and opened it to First Corinthians, Chapter 13, the chapter on love. “This is it,” he said. “This is the truth.” In 1972, he was attending a summer institute in North Dakota to become a Bible translator (he spoke four languages!), and he met the love of his life, Linda, who was also attending the institute. They were married in August of 1972 and joyfully welcomed a daughter, Rebekah Ruth Kamoji, three years later.
Linda and Dan traveled the world for Jesus, going on short-term mission trips to Russia, China, Moldova, and India. One of his favorite memories was standing on the street in Russia and handing out Bibles to the Russian children. Dan was loving, kind, intelligent, faithful, stubborn (!), and very generous. His family and friends loved to see the twinkle in his eye when he thought he was up to something mischievous. He had a heart for His Lord, his family, and the lost and lonely. He loved his family, his church, and this country. In addition to his wife, Linda, he is survived by his daughter, Rebekah Phillips (Chris) and two grandchildren who he adored, Josh and Priya.
He is also survived by his beloved family in India including four sisters, three brothers, and their families. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Channappa and Gangavva Kamoji.
