Dalton Kent Gray, 87, of Jacksonville, died Friday, August 31, 2007, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born April 4, 1920, in Morristown, N.Y., the son of William More and Lois Eliza Reid Gray. He married Ida Elizabeth Haynes on Sept. 1, 1945, in Chickasha, Okla. and she preceded him in death on March 21, 2007.

He is survived by six sons, John Everett (wife, Karen) of South Milwaukee, Wisc., Dalton James of Berwyn, David Leslie (wife, Marybel) of Victorville, Calif., Steven Haynes (wife, Nancy) of Cranbury, N.J., Charles William (wife, Linda) of Homewood and Michael Reid (wife, Mary) of Murrayville; eight grandchildren, Linda, Jodie, Alan, Amber, Kristin, Scott, Vanessa, and Jennifer Gray; one brother and one sister, Earl (wife, Jean) of Concord, N.H., and Frances (husband, Walter) Klock of Venice, Fla.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Everett.

Mr. Gray was a 1938 graduate of Syracuse (New York) Vocational High School. He was a 1952 graduate of Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. where he received a Bachelorâ??s Degree in Horticulture, and a 1970 graduate of the University of Illinois in Urbana where he received a Masterâ??s Degree in Education. He was a teacher of horticulture at Crete-Monee High School in Crete and Sauk Area Career Center in Midlothian. Upon his retirement, he lived in Arkansas for ten years and was a member of Hot Springs Village United Methodist Church. Mr. Gray was active with Meals-on-Wheels, and GED programs, and was a member of the American Legion. In 2000, he and his wife moved to Jacksonville, where he was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force from 1945 to 1947 serving as First Lieutenant during WW II.
