DALE TERESE LUKAS (Age 77)
Dale Lukas of Silver Spring, Maryland, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2014 of cancer. She was the beloved wife of Algis A. Lukas. She was born in Marijampole, Lithuania on May 10, 1937, to Apolonia Kondrotaite and Arturas Koklys. She and her family immigrated to the United States in 1951. She earned a B.S. in Chemistry from Mount St. Joseph’s College in Cleveland, Ohio and then worked at Union Carbide in the research library department in Chicago, IL. Later she and Algis were married at Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Chicago, Illinois on September 6, 1964. They raised their three children in Bethesda and Potomac, Maryland.
In retirement Dale and Algis lived at Leisure World in Silver Spring, MD. Dale is survived by her devoted husband, Algis Lukas; and her children and their spouses, Kristina Lukas and her husband, Kevin Sullivan, Loreta McPartland and her husband, John and Paul Lukas and his wife, Kirsten. She will be greatly missed by her nine grandchildren, Lina, Andrew, Chloe and Aleksandra Sullivan, Caitlin, Joseph and Elizabeth McPartland, Monika and Noelle Lukas. She is also survived by her brother, Jonas Koklys and sisters, Dana Dirvonins and Lydia Vaitkus.
In addition to providing immeasurable love and support to her extended family throughout her life, Dale also earned a Masters Degree in Library Science at the University of Maryland and then went on to work for many years at the National Library of Medicine, at the National Institute of Health. Dale was also dedicated to her community. In her early years she was a passionate leader in the Lithuanian Girl Scouts Association. Later she devoted herself to the Lithuanian-American Community Association where she served as Chair of the Lithuanian Cultural Affairs Council and then Chair of the Lithuanian American Archives Committee. Dale also supported the Lithuanian arts, organizing many exhibitions and performances of art, music and dance.
