Dale J. Garrett
1930 – 2016
Dale J. Garrett passed on Thursday, June 9. He was born in Lebanon, Missouri, on July 24, 1930. He and his family moved in the midst of the Great Depression, loading everything they owned into their car and heading west. They settled in Wilder, Idaho, where Dale excelled in sports, graduated from high school and met the love of his life.
Dad worked for Safeway in Ontario, Oregon, for 7 years then became a lumberman for Boise Payette Lumber Company, which was acquired by Boise Cascade. He retired from the Boise Cascade Container plant in Nampa in 1992 after 35 years.
He was a charter member of Caldwell Jaycees and helped plant the first trees at Purple Sage Golf Course.
Dad built a camper when his kids were small, and their family of 5 traveled throughout the West. Dad and his sons (with occasional help from the extended family) built a cabin on Lake Cascade’s West Mtn.
Dad always enjoyed hunting, but it was mostly about being with those he loved. From the early years with his brothers in law, to the last 30+ years annually hunting with his sons. They rarely brought anything home, but that wasn’t the point; it was being together and enjoying the incredible scenery.
Dale had an impish side to him, always loving a prank and a joke with a sly smile barely hidden. As his sister-in-law coined, “You knew that Dale was pulling your leg when his lips were moving.” Beneath his quiet exterior was a man with a tender heart who would give endlessly to those whom he loved and respected. Dad will be remembered most for his life-long devotion to his family, his 67-year love affair with his beautiful wife, living life with integrity, and his dedication to the Shriners’ mission of helping children.
Dale is survived by his devoted wife Betty, sons Terry Garrett (Linda) and Stan Garrett (Valencia) and daughter Debra Garrett (Brian Stephens), 6 grand children and 7 great grandchildren, sister Elizabeth Kirkhart & brother Hal Garrett (LaRaine), sisters-in-law Edna Cupp and Pauline Cupp, plus numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clay and Hila Garrett, brother Dwaine Garrett (Jean) and sister Lorraine Beavers, sisters/brothers-in-law Charlotte and Tom Posey, Fae and Ernie Griat, Wesley (Bud) Cupp and Chuck Cupp.
The family would like to offer heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate and skilled teams at St. Luke’s Hospice and Caregivers Assisting Retired Elders (C.A.R.E) who helped make it possible for dad to stay at home for his last few months.
