Dale G. Hackstaff
Dale Hackstaff of Denver, Colorado passed away Friday, September 23, 2016. He is survived by his wife Marlene (Quinnild) Hackstaff and children Julia Hackstaff Cooley, Edward (and Sheena) Hackstaff, and Carol Hackstaff Thomas, as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dale was known as an honorable, strong, fair, and hard-working man. Those who knew him enjoyed his silly, sometimes sarcastic sense of humor. Most of all, he was a loyal and caring husband and father.
Dale’s Life
Dale was born July 5, 1930 in Ponca City, Oklahoma the son of Addison and Lucille Hackstaff (both Denver natives). Dale had many good memories of Ponca City that he shared with us over the years. He lived there until he was 12 years old with his Dad, Mom, and brother Eddie. They took occasional trips back to Colorado to spend time with family where he got to know many of his cousins. Dale’s mom died in Oklahoma when he was young and so they moved back to Denver in about 1942. Having the Denver family around was very helpful for his father in raising two young boys. They had a housekeeper that helped keep the boys in line as well. Dale felt very close to his family especially his Aunt’s and Uncle’s that filled an important role in shaping the man he became.
Back in Denver Dale started junior high school where he made important lifelong friendships. He had three very close friends; Dave Breternitz, Lanny Metzger, and Bob Cory, the four of them were the best of friends all their lives. Dale is the last to pass on. It says a lot about them to have had this friendship for so long. Our families spent some really good time together as all the children were growing up.
Dale graduated from South High School. After High School he enlisted in the Marine Corp. and was in the Korean War. He had some very entertaining stories from his time in the Marines; he was the company clerk (like Radar O’Reilly in M*A*S*H). When he returned he attended Colorado A & M. Anytime we said anything about him going to CSU he corrected us and said he was an Aggie!
Dale left Colorado A&M to go to work for his father and worked there until his father retired. He then went to work for EK Williams (a Bookkeeping and Accounting firm) for a couple years and has maintained a relationship with them ever since.
Dale met Marlene on a blind date, April 28th, 1956. It was quite a memorable date which started at a bar on Lookout Mountain, a quick rescue of someone who’d driven off the side of the Lookout Mountain road, and finally to Pagliacci’s (a well-known long time restaurant in Denver). While they dated, Marlene worked the night shift as a nurse at Colorado General. This meant that Dale would be up very late, take her home and head straight to work. He must have really liked her a lot! They were married just seven months later, November 17, in Minnesota. Never could figure out why anyone would pick Minnesota over Colorado in November, but there you go. They were married almost 60 years. One of my favorite memories of them is that they always held hands, and their last day together they were doing that again.
In June 1970 Dale bought Bow Mar Standard which was to be the best part of his working life. He owned and operated Bow Mar Standard for nearly 30 years and was well liked and respected by employees and the community.
When Dale retired he just couldn’t sit on the couch!
Dale enjoyed life with his family and friends: He loved our Colorado mountains and spent a great deal of time hiking, camping, and fishing in them. He spent time every summer in Minnesota at our cottage playing in the lake, fishing, reading and relaxing. Dale and Marlene were able to do quite a bit of traveling.
Dale was a success in every way that counts as a father, friend, and businessman. He will be missed by many people that will always love and respect him.
