Cynthia (Cindy) M. Gipson, 63, of Norfolk, died Wednesday, March 13 in Norfolk.

Cindy will be remembered by her family, friends, colleagues and by generations of students for her kindness, compassion, caring, and love. She lived by the motto that no act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted. A consummate educator, Cindy shared her kindness with everyone in her life, from her closest family to complete strangers. Her generosity and her strength supported hundreds of her friends during her life. Her professionalism and her wisdom aided many of her colleagues. Her compassion, caring and ability to connect with young people helped thousands of students to successfully navigate the turbulent transitions of adolescence. And her love was the rock that built her devoted family.

Born on September 25, 1949, in Roanoke VA, Cindy was the daughter of Dallas and Eleanor (Loudermilk) Miller (Necessary). Her father’s Air Force assignments moved their family frequently, and she grew up in Virginia, Wyoming, Louisiana, New Mexico, Ohio, Mississippi, California, and Morocco. She graduated from Cheyenne East High School in Wyoming, earned her bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate from Hastings College, and received her master’s degree from Wayne State College.

Cindy married Roger Gipson on June 1, 1969, in Cheyenne WY. The couple lived in Hastings until 1977, when they moved to Norfolk. Cindy taught for 29 years at Norfolk Junior High and Norfolk Middle School. She also taught at Northeast Community College, Wayne State College, and several other area elementary and high schools. She had a passion for literature, young adult lit, and poetry, and she loved to travel.

Cindy is survived by her husband; son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Marie Gipson of Seattle, WA; son, Neil Gipson of Washington, DC; mother, Eleanor Necessary of Salem, VA; father and step-mother, Dallas and Jean Miller of Newport News, VA; sister, Ivy Miller of Hampton Roads, VA; nephew, Adam Bliwas of Maui, HI; and niece, Lauren Bliwas of Chicago, IL.

She was preceded in death by her adoring step-father, Ralph Necessary.
