Curtis Leroy Johnson, 86, of Cambridge, MA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday May 11, 2022 at the home of his son Peter and his wife Victoria Johnson, Worcester, MA following a long illness. he was born February 6, 1936 to his parents, the late Ruth E. (Hill) and Curtis J. Johnson of Cambridge, MA. He lived in Cambridge for many years where he graduated from Latin-Rindge Technical High School, after which he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.
Curtis was proud to grow up in Cambridge with his close -knit family of many aunts, uncles and cousins. He loved watching T.V., especially Old Westerns and the “Patriots”, He loved drinking at his favorite watering holes, “The Can Tab, and The Post” and socializing with the regular crowd, and he loved to paint beautiful landscapes on canvas. Curtis loved people. His door was always open to old and new friends. He got along with just about everyone and loved being the center of attention. He had a generous heart and a wonderful sense of humor. Everyone that knew him, appreciated him and loved him, mostly when he sang his doo wop music at top volume. He loved working in the garden and fixing up his backyard for the many cookouts he held for his huge family and many friends. They showed up because they knew Curtis had steaks on the grill and beer in the cooler.
All those who knew Curt, knew he had a genuine appreciation for his relationships with his long-time friends and family, and also anyone that laughed at his corny jokes. He was known for his generosity and for being cool, carefree and charming, with a flair for fashion.
Curtis is survived by his sons C. Andrew and wife Tina Johnson of S. Weymouth, MA; Peter A. and wife Victoria Johnson of Worcester, MA with whom he resided and his daughter, Joy L. Johnson of Austin, Texas. Also left to mourn his memory are (4) grandchildren Morgan and Brooke Johnson of Brockton, MA., Peter Jr. and Christopher Johnson of Worcester, MA. (2) step grandchildren, Tanika Mitchell of New York & Johnny Mitchell of Worcester; a nephew Arthur Sutherland and wife Linda and their 4 sons, Jason, Jarrett, Justin and Jordan of Woburn, MA. His (2) great grandchildren, Isabella & Elisabeth Johnson of Georgia and (9) step great grandchildren, Elianni Huertas, Denairo McNeill, Cairo and Chace Powell of S. Weymouth, MA, also, Niiyel and Bernard Johnson of Worcester, MA. Ly’vasia
and Lahmir Gordon of New York and Joneliz Mitchell, Worcester, MA. He also, leaves to mourn his memory, his former wife, Verna P. M. Johnson-Hughes, a cousin David Hill of Allston, MA and special friend, Kathy McNamara and a host of extended family and friends.
Curtis is also, predeceased by his only sibling, Ruth (Sissy) Sutherland and her daughter Susan and grandson Devin D. Johnson.
