Curtis Lewis Horton, known affectionately to his family and close friends as Curt or Curtis Blow (C-Blow), passed away June 7, 2024, in his hometown of Washington, DC. Born August 26, 1962, he was the son and only child of the late Charles Lewis Horton and Helen Bernice H. Horton. His loving parents and devoted wife Tonya Horton precede him in death. Growing up in Washington, DC, Curtis was raised in a tight-knit community where he made lifelong friendships with other children in the neighborhood. His early years of education were completed in Washington, DC and he graduated from Frank W. Ballou Senior High School. Following high school, he attended college at the University of Miami majoring in mass communication. He also became a member of the great Greek fraternity, Omega Psi Phi. From joining this fraternity, he formed friendships that developed into a brotherhood. After college, he began his career working with the Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program. Afterwards, he held various jobs in the DMV area. Since Curtis was a music guy, his most memorable jobs were working for Kemp Mill Music and The Wiz record stores. This put him in front of the most famous worldwide hip hop and local music artist of the times. He also DJ’d for a little while, recorded, and sold go-go tapes throughout the city. Curtis and his late wife met in the registrar’s office where Tonya worked, on the campus of the University of Miami. After college, Curtis moved back home to DC, together with Tonya and their twin daughters, Nabriya and Shabriya Horton. Later, they were joined in holy matrimony at Contee AME Zion Church on February 13, 1987. After living in DC for a few years, they relocated to Prince George’s County, MD. Curtis kept his home filled with 70s, go-go, Miami bass, house, rap, and rnb records, CDs, and cassette tapes, occasionally putting his daughters on to new hip hop or rnb artist. He enjoyed taking his daughters to the park, roller skating, concerts, and to see the light shows put on by the radio station at Landover Mall. He loved music and passed his love of it down to his children. Having a love for music, him and his wife would attend concerts together. Seeing Janet Jackson was the most unforgettable concert they attended. Being a party guy, Curtis enjoyed and loved a good party with his friends. Also, coming from a family who loved football he would attend many games. If he was at home watching the game, he could be heard throughout the house, yelling at the TV. Because he loved to laugh, listening to Nephew Tommy’s prank phone calls on the Steve Harvey Morning Show was a must. In addition, he loved to tell stories about his life and had a fantastic storytelling ability. He once said, if he could write a book about his life, he would. We will leave the title he gave for that book out LOL! There are so many words that come to mind when describing Curtis, a man of immense humor, cool guy, party king, always on joke time, Que dog, great storyteller, wonderful friend, father, and grandfather. He will always be remembered for his lighthearted nature and charismatic personality. As we celebrate Curtis’s homegoing, the memory of his love and big personality will always remain with his family, friends, and whomever he touched. He leaves to cherish his memory, loving daughters Shabriya and Nabriya Horton; two loving granddaughters, and a host of family and friends.
