Curtis H. Brown, 91, of Goshen, formerly of Elkhart, passed away Saturday, April 16, at IU Health Goshen Hospital.
He was born July 19, 1924, in Worcester, Mass., to George C. and Kate Elinor (Havens) Brown.
Survivors include one daughter, Catharine (Bradley) Phillips of Poway, Calif; one son, Jonathan (Denise) Brown of Pewaukee, Wis.; three stepdaughters, Sharron “Sherry” Phillips of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Becky Nystrand of South Bend and Carla (Doug) Watts of Elkhart; one stepson, Gregg (Jeanine) Watts of Elkhart; two sisters, Elizabeth Burget of Worcester, Mass., and Ann O’Connell of Chatham, Mass.; six grandchildren; and 10 stepgrandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wives, Ann Hayes Brown and Helen M. Watts-Brown.
Curtis proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European theater, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, during which he received a Purple Heart.
Curtis was later employed as a map maker with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for 15 years and later with Elkhart County for 30 years prior to his retirement at the age of 80.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Orthodox Church in Goshen and the John Birch Society.
Curtis often enjoyed outdoor activities with family, spending time birdwatching, mountain climbing and skiing, and he loved observing Hebrew and Christian traditions.
