Mr. Curlee Spencer Sr. was born the second child to Clara B. Spencer and James Spencer Sr. on Aug. 12, 1926 in Coy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years, Mrs. Annie G. Spencer; eldest brother, James Spencer Jr. and his wife Carrie; sister, Ola Mae Huff and husband Charlie.
On Aug. 27, 1948 he united in marriage to Annie Gertrude Mitchell. God blessed this union with four children, Curlee Jr., Henry, Anita and Horace.
Mr. Spencer confessed Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and united with Tate’s Chapel AME Church in Coy, where he attended Sunday School and was a class leader as a young man.
In 1953, he relocated his young family to Mt. Vernon and joined Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member. In 1989, he and his wife reunited with Tate’s Chapel AME Church in Coy, where he served as a trustee and later trustee emeritus. Mr. Spencer was currently a founding member of Taits Community Church in Coy.
He was a retired heavy equipment operator for Alabama Power Company at Barry Steam Plant in Bucks.
On Thursday, Aug. 27, 2020, Bro. Spencer departed this life at his residence in Mt. Vernon.
He leaves to cherish his memory his four children, Curlee (Christine) Spencer Jr. of Jackson, Henry (Patricia) Spencer of Mobile, Anita (Stanley) Harvey of Picayune, Miss., and Horace (Judy) Spencer of Slidell, La.; eight devoted grandchildren, Theresa (Fredrick) Merriweather, Curlee (Tiffany) Spencer III, LaJuana Callier, Cassandra Spencer, Henry Spencer Jr., all of Mobile, Tiffany (Rodney) Woodham of Perry, Ga., Justin (Tonya) Spencer of Lafayette, La., and Michael (Brittany) Harvey of Metarie, La.; two step-granddaughters, Tammy (Jimmy) Martin of Jackson and Temekia (Mack) McGill of Montgomery; with a host of great-grandchildren; four brothers, Edgar (Minnie, deceased) Spencer of Mobile, Ernest (Mattie) Spencer of Mt. Vernon, Cleo (Eula, deceased) Spencer of Pensacola, Fla., and Jim (Ida Mae) Spencer of Vredenburg; one sister, Annie Bell (Frank) Moye of Pensacola, Fla., and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
