Cort L. Cheney, 69, of West Lafayette, passed away on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at IU Health Arnett Hospital.
He was born August 16, 1952, in Columbus, OH, to the late John and Emma (Shields) Cheney.
Cort graduated from St. Charles Illinois High School in 1970 and Illinois State University in 1974 with a BS in Business.
On 10/27/1979 he married Susan Gutzler in Bloomington, IL and she survives.
Cort and Susan have lived in the Lafayette area since 1987 and have enjoyed spending half the year in The Villages, FL for the past seven winters.
Cort began his career as a financial advisor with Edward Jones in 1980. After years of being a top producer at Edward Jones, Cort founded Cheney Investment Group in 1998. The name was changed to Cornerstone Financial in 2004. He continued to work part-time up until his passing in a career he truly loved as he enjoyed helping clients achieve their financial goals.
Cort enjoyed playing pickleball and golf. He won the Lafayette City Senior Golf Championship and won the Coyote Crossing Club Championship twice. He also won the Florida Senior Open (golf) and placed in many pickleball tournaments. He was instrumental in developing the local Lafayette area Pickleball Club into what it is today. He volunteered as a golf coach for Tecumseh Jr. High in the 90s. He was a former member of Covenant Church for many years and currently is a member of Calvary Church in West Lafayette and Live Oaks Community Church in The Villages, FL. He started and helped lead the men’s ministry at Calvary Church, was very involved with the local ministry Young Life, and was currently volunteering for Samaritan’s Purse. He has been a speaker at Westville Correctional Facility and the Great Banquet and was a former Lafayette Christian School Foundation Board Member.
Surviving with his wife, Susan of West Lafayette are two sons, Grant Cheney and Garrett (wife Jennifer) Cheney both of West Lafayette, two brothers, Clark (wife Cathy) Cheney of St. Charles, IL and Cal (wife Joyce) Cheney of Broomfield, CO. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Millie and Caroline Cheney.
