Mother Swoopes  was born in Lawrence County, Alabama on January 21, 1914 to the parenthood of Cornelius and Martha Stewart Swoopes.  She exchanged her earthly wings for heavenly wings and took flight to live with the Lord on January 14, 2013.

She confessed hope in Christ at an early age and joined First Baptist Church of Hillsboro, Alabama. She later united with Mount Olive Primitive Baptist Church where she was the oldest Mother of the church and served as secretary of the Sisters Aide Society.

Mother Owens was united in holy matrimony to the late James Samuel Owens, Sr. and to this union, six children were born, the family also included three stepchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, parents; one son, James Samuel Owens Jr.; stepdaughter, Belinda Bell Porter; six brothers, Preston, Sandy, Joseph, Smith, Homer and Jessie; three sisters, Hattie, Mahalia and Mary; four  of her brother’s children who she raised that were very dear to her heart, Sandy Jr., Curtis, James and Hattie.

She leaves to cherish her love and wisdom to: three daughters, Gloria (Mizell) Bouldin, Martha O. Robinson both of Decatur and Dorothy O. Smith of Hillsboro; two sons, Coynis R. Owens and Donald C. Owens both of Hillsboro; two stepsons, James F. Harris and John J. Harris both of Courtland; one god daughter, Katie Frances Owens of Hillsboro; three sisters in law, Susie Brown, Louise Jones and Pauline Swoopes  all of Hillsboro; 15 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
