Corky Nelson, February 25, 1939 – November 17, 2014.
Corky Nelson, 75, of Belton. Coach Nelson died Monday, November 17, 2014 in a Temple hospital. Coach Nelson was born February 25, 1939 in San Antonio, the son of Lewis and Louise Clements Nelson. He was a 1957 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio. He attended Baylor University and received his Bachelors and Masters from Southwest Texas State College.
Coach Nelson was a teacher and a football coach. He began his career at Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio and continued at Harlandale High School. In 1969 he took on the position of defensive line and linebacker coach at the University of North Texas. In 1974 he accepted the Tyler John Tyler head coach job in Tyler. From 1974 -1981 Coach Nelson was the defensive coordinator at Baylor University.
In 1982 until 1988 he was the head coach of the University of North Texas, and took on the role as Athletic Director and head coach in 1989. He was with the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor from 1999 until he retired in 2006. Coach Nelson married Judy Buckles September 28, 1984 in Marietta, Oklahoma. He was inducted into the North Texas Hall of Fame as well as the Texas State University Hall of Fame. He was preceded in death by one daughter Carlyn Nelson.
Survivors include his wife Judy Nelson of Belton; two daughters Tracy Clark and husband George and Kerie Nelson-Echols and husband Shaylon all of Austin; one brother Lewis Nelson and wife Ann of San Antonio; and two grandchildren Audrey Clark and Nate Clark and many nieces and nephews.
