It is in deep sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Corina C. Baca age 85 of Hurley, NM transitioned peacefully in her home into the loving arms of our Lord and Savior on the evening of July 7, 2013. She was in the caring hands of her loving family throughout her final days.
Corina Dolores was born on December 27, 1927 to Ramon and Guadalupe Castillo. She attended Hurley Elementary and Hurley High School. She was unable to finish school due to the passing of her mother and became the caregiver of her younger siblings. Corina was blessed with a loving step-mother Mary Pena Castillo. In 1948 Corina was married to Jose Alfredo Baca and shared a marriage of 60 years.
They were blessed with three children and raised them in Hurley, NM. Corina had a thirst for knowledge and attended classes towards her GED. She loved reading about law, politics, world and New Mexico history. She also kept up with world national and local affairs. She was a labor, equal and civil rights activist. She enjoyed traveling, music, dancing, gardening, drawing and painting. As long as she was physically able she spent her time volunteering with reading programs within the community. She was a devoted member of the Catholic Church, a Cobre booster and volunteered for numerous activities involving her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also served as a second mom to anyone who needed a loving hand.
Corina is preceded in death by her parents Ramon and Guadalupe Castillo, her husband Jose Alfredo Baca, her sister Consulo Garcia, brother Nicolas Castillo and great granddaughter Alyssandra Guererro.
Those left to mourn her passing include her children Robert Baca and partner Linda Skalic of Las Cruces, NM, Clara B. Dean and husband Charles B. of Santa Clara,NM, and Virginia Greenlee of Hurley, NM. Also surviving are her sisters Alicia Robertson of Safford, AZ, Clara Aguilera of Riverside, CA, grandchildren Elizabeth A. Dean, Victoria Medina, Christina Romero, Catherine M. Dean, Elizabeth Baca, Maria Theresa Guererro. Twelve great-grandchildren six great-great grandchildren and beloved nieces and nephews.
Our beloved Corina will be remembered for her kindness, generosity and her independent spirit.
