Constance Ruth Joachim Clemens of Ogden, UT, died on May 1, 2016, at the Mt. Ogden Health and Rehabilitation Center in Washington Terrace.

Constance was born in Orange, NJ, on June 19, 1924, the third child and only daughter of William Barefield Joachim, an oil company executive, and Edna Virginia Nivison Joachim, a homemaker. She grew up with her parents and big brothers, William B. Joachim Jr. and Walter F. Joachim, in Drexel Hill, PA, a near suburb of Philadelphia. She attended Upper Darby High School, then took a two-year degree in secretarial studies from the Drexel Institute of Technology (now Drexel University) in Philadelphia. Later in life, she and her husband, John David Clemens of West Chester, PA, earned Doctor of Chiropractic degrees at the Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, MO (now Cleveland University in Overland Park, KS.)

Constance was preceded in death by John, in 2007. She is survived by children John David Clemens Jr., known as David (Sarah) of West Chester, PA; Scott Douglas Clemens (Dolly) of Redmond, WA; Peter Conover Clemens (Tammy) of North Ogden; Janne Fraser Clemens Sawada (Yorihiro) of Honolulu, HI; and Mark Armstrong Clemens of Salt Lake City. Also surviving her are 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, two of whom bear her names – Nobuhle Ruth Clemens, daughter of David and Sarah, and Constance Permenter, daughter of Mika (Sawada) and Justin Permenter.

Some of Constance’s great loves included:

a” John, her husband of 60 years, whom she met at the post-World War II wedding of John’s elder brother Don Clemens and Mary Chandler in West Chester, PA, and married a few months later in September 1947. (Constance was a member of the bride’s party, having met Mary while both studied at Drexel.)

a” Music. As a young woman prior to her marriage, Constance sang light opera semi-professionally in Philadelphia.
