Connie Sue Mayer passed away on September 5, 2022, due to ovarian cancer. Connie was born on April 7, 1936, in Wichita, Kansas, minutes before her twin sister, Carol Lou, joining their brother Kendal and their parents, Eleanor and Lee King. She was predeceased by her parents and second husband, Jack Mayer, and is survived by her siblings; her first husband, Vaughn Miller; their children, Kevan Miller (Sandra) and Rachelle Spell (Nathan); and adored grandchildren, Hanna Miller, Jackson Spell (Jessi), Claire Miller, and Rosalind Fogg (Wes); along with several nieces and nephews.
Connie attended East High School in Wichita, then graduated with a degree in Home Economics from Kansas State University in 1958. She married fellow college student, Vaughn E. Miller of Oberlin, Kansas, on August 30 later that year. They welcomed son Kevan Lee in 1959 and daughter Rachelle Lynn in 1965. The family moved from Wichita to Columbia, SC in 1970.
Connie joined the workforce first with the SC State Department then at Spring Valley High School where she developed courses on Parenthood Education to help young people learn about relationships and child development for healthy families. This desire to help and counsel people continued throughout her life, even after she retired after 27 years in education.
After divorce, Connie moved back to Wichita. Five years later, she met and married Jack Mayer, brought together by a common friend. They had 5 loving years together before Jack passed in 2012.
Connie moved to Georgia to be closer to her daughter in 2015 where she “met no strangers”, making new friends in her apartment building, book clubs, and fitness classes. She moved to a beautiful condo right before the pandemic hit. Unfortunately, memory loss and ovarian cancer then limited her health but never affected her positive personality. For six months after her cancer diagnosis, hospice and family support eased her last days.
