Col. Walter Richard (Dick) Brett (USAF – Ret.) born February 12, 1931 in St. Augustine, FL.
Dick Brett, 86, made his final takeoff on Friday October 20, 2017 in his home at IRCC, Viera surrounded by his family.
He is survived by his sister Nancy Ware (Nick) of Jacksonville, FL, children Brenda Cockerham (Tom) of Alma, AR; Carol Manley (Gene) of Largo; FL, Dale Brett of Viera, FL; William Brett of Fort Myers, FL; Robert Brett (Debbie) of Ruskin, FL and his 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Dick received his commission in 1952 as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He was a decorated Vietnam War veteran and recipient of the Bronze Star, Air Medal, and Legion of Merit. He flew weather reconnaissance in Alaska and Vietnam. He served as the Staff Weather Officer at Cape Canaveral AFS for many of the Apollo missions and specifically for the recovery for the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.
