  • Date Of Death: December 16, 2017

Walter Dawson (Dick) Spann, 99, is now with his Savior and with June, the love of his life.  He was born Sept. 25, 1918 in Bonifay, Florida.  At 19, he joined the Army Air Corps at Maxwell Field in Alabama and from there to Randolph Field where he was certified in aviation medicine. It was at Cochran Field, GA where, in 1941, he met and married June Hobbs who worked at the same hospital.  Shortly thereafter, he received his commission at OCS in Miami Beach where his interests shifted to Material, Logistics and Supply.  After many assignments, including WWII, Korea and Vietnam, he retired in 1977 with the rank of Colonel when he and June moved to Satellite Beach.  In 1990, they finally settled at Indian River Colony Club.  Throughout the following years, many folks around Viera and Suntree knew him as “the Almond Joy guy”.  Wherever he went, he brought his bag of Almond Joys to share with those he met.  His reason?…”I try to spread a little sunshine wherever I go”.

Dick is survived by his son Walter D. Spann, Jr. and Walter’s wife Lisa; one granddaughter and three great grandsons. Predeceasing Dick was his wife, June and his daughter, Joan.
