Colonel Robert H. Gernand, USAF (Ret), age 90, of Milford formerly of Fairfield and beloved husband to Cynthia Chambers Gernand, passed away at Milford Hospital on Wednesday, June 6, 2012.  Born in New York, NY on July 4, 1921, he was the son of the late Robert Hoen and Verna Vanderpool Gernand Sr.  He served with great pride and honor in the US Air Force during WWII as pilot in the 450th Bombardment Group and was captured, becoming a POW in Stalag Luft I in Barth, Germany. Robert then served in the Korean Conflict and became a dedicated member of the 118th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, the “Flying Yankees”.

In addition to his wife Cynthia of 61 years, he is survived by his children, Nancy Donegan (James) of Milford, formerly of Fairfield, Robert Reid of CA and Helen Roth (Mark) of NH.  Also his grandchildren,  James and Jeffrey Donegan,  Isaac and Eleanor Roth, Ben, Jennifer and Jonathan Gernand and great grandchildren, Tucker and Colin Donegan.  He was predeceased by his son George Gernand.
