Colonel (Retired, US Army) Charles Harold Drexler Sr, 86, passed away August 6, 2020 at his home in Newnan, GA. The son of the late George Henry and Martha Fletcher Drexler, he was born in Tifton, GA, October 11, 1933. After 30 years service in the US Army, Col Drexler retired to Tifton in 1983. For over 30 years he served as an elder and a trustee of the First Presbyterian Church in Tifton and was a volunteer, President, and member of the Board of Directors for Meals on Wheels. For several years he served as a member of the Tift County Planning and Zoning Board and as a member of the Tift County Board of Elections. Col Drexler earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1954 from the University of North GA, Dahlonega, and his Masters Degree in Chemistry in 1964 from the University of South Carolina, Columbia. Highlights of his military career included: Instructor and Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the US Military Academy, West Point, NY Branch Chief in the Headquarters of 1st Logistical Command in Vietnam Nuclear, Chemical, Biological Branch Chief, 5th US Army, Ft Sheridan, IL Commander NIKE Missile Battery, Washington DC Commander 548 Supply and Service Battalion, Ft McClellan, AL Commander 60th Ordnance Brigade, US Army Europe, Zweibrucken, Germany Military Service Awards: Bronze Star (2), Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), National Defense Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Vietnam Service Medal (4 Campaigns), Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Col. Drexler was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Sally Fiedler Drexler, brothers H Bennett Drexler, J Stanley Drexler, Albert M Drexler, P Gregory Drexler, sisters Rita E Drexler, Martha Hilda Drexler. Survivors include son, Charles H Drexler, Jr (Joan) of Lawrenceville, GA, daughters Jan Sewall (Les) of Newnan, GA and Amy Zauner of Newnan, GA, 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, brother, Mark C Drexler (Jan) of Calhoun, GA, sister-in-laws, Clarice (Ben), Shirley (Stanley), Wylene (Albert), Sandra (Greg), and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
