Colonel Raymond Paul Lowman, United States Air Force (Retired) died on 2 February 2007 in Huntsville, Alabama at the age of 85. Col. Lowman was born on 14 May 1921 in Geary, Oklahoma to parents Benjamin Franklin Lowman and Ollie Gertrude Sullivan Lowman.

 

Col. Lowman entered United States Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet Training in 1942 and graduated in Class 43-B from Foster Field, Texas. Col. Lowman was deployed to England with the 365th Fighter Squadron/358th Fighter Group in September 1943. During the Second World War (WWII) he flew 78 combat missions, 41 as flight commander, primarily in the P-47 Thunderbolt. He participated in the D-Day invasion and the Campaign for Northern France. During the Campaign for Northern France his Thunderbolt was downed during combat. Although he escaped 3 times, he ultimately spent 10 months in Stalag Luft III as a Prisoner of War.

Col. Lowman retained his unwavering faith in God and Jesus Christ throughout his life. He remains in the hearts of many a loving and beloved husband, father and friend. He is survived by his sons Col. Raymond P. Lowman II (USA, Ret.), Dr. Rodney L. Lowman and Dr. Kenneth K. Lowman, their spouses, four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. His wife of over 60 years, Olga Lewis Lowman, preceded him in death.

In retirement Col. Lowman remained active in many organizations including the Graphic Arts Association, the Air Force Association, the Order of Daedalions, the Military Order of the World Wars, the Military Officers Association of America, the American Legion, P-47 Pilots Association, the Stalag Luft III Former Prisoners of War Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Col. Lowman served as Director, Vice-President, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors for the 9th Air Force Association.
