DURHAM- Colonel George Dallas Stephens, Sr., 98, passed away Friday, May 25, 2018 at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham.
Colonel Stephens was born June 24, 1919 in Durham, NC to the late Paul and Ida Stephens. He proudly served his country as Colonel in the United States Army serving in World War II and Korean War. Colonel Stephens retired from the United States Army in 1979 after 38 years of service. He was the City of Durham Father of the Year in 1971. He donated blood over 100 times to the American Red Cross. A member of the Durham Lions Club since 1955. Life Member of American Legion Post 7 for 55 years. Member of the Retired Officers Association. He was a former member of Carr United Methodist Church for 80 years until its closure then became a member of Bethany United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Cornealia Class at Bethany United Methodist Church.
Colonel Stephens is predeceased in death by his wife, Claudia M. Boone. Colonel Stephens was the last surviving family member of 10 children.
Colonel Stephens is survived by his son, George Dallas Stephens, Jr. of Wrightsville Beach, NC; daughters, Sharon Stone of Durham, NC, Catherine Sensing (Rev. Donald) of Greenbrier, TN; grandchildren, April M. Stone (Janice), Joshua J, Stone (Christopher), Stephen M. Sensing, Dr. Thomas A. Sensing (Dr. Wendy), Elizabeth Lee Sensing; great-grandson, James Dallas Devito-Stone.
