Mrs. Mollie Clotile Elizabeth Dawson Harris lovingly known to many as “Mama Clotie” was born October 30, 1914 in Prospect, Tennessee to the late Benton Dawson Sr. and Datie Bassham Dawson. Clotile was the oldest of thirteen children born to their union. She was preceded in death by ten sisters and brothers; Carrie, Paul Dunbar, Joseph, Clara, Oscar, Robert, Sarah, Benton, William, and Henrietta. Mama Clotie was a devoted mother to her two sons; Maurice “Scribby” Harris and Harold “Genie” Harris both of whom preceded her in death.

Clotile accepted Christ at an early age at Browns Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Prospect, Tennessee. Her family later joined Jones Chapel Methodist Church after relocating to Decatur, Alabama. When Jones Chapel later merged with King’s Memorial United Methodist Church, Clotile selflessly shared her spiritual gifts.

Mrs. Harris was very active in her church giving her time, talent, and service. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Hattie Taylor Circle, a Communion Stewardess, and an active member of the Hospitality Committee until her health failed.

Known in the community for her outstanding cooking and southern hospitality, Mama Clotie was featured in The Decatur Daily newspaper and several cookbooks for her recipes. Everyone loved her turkey and dressing, homemade rolls, fruit cakes and delicious apples pies. Fine dining, plentiful portions of food, and a well-appointed table setting was the rule in her house and not the exception. The holidays were special for her grandchildren, other family members, and friends because of the delicious treats she prepared for them.

Mrs. Harris was gainfully employed for over seventy five years. She was employed by the City of Decatur Parks and Recreation Department – Jessie Lewis Smith (East Town) Park, the Princess Theater, and the Sterrs Daycare Center where she retired after many years of service.

Mama Clotie leaves to cherish her memory two devoted daughters-in-law: Annie Ruth Harris and Mable Harris of Decatur, Alabama. Four granddaughters: Gloria H.
