Clarence William Van Steenis was born on June 13, 1916, at rural Knoxville near Flagler. He was the only child of Huber and Minnie Slot Van Steenis.

He received his eighth grade education by the age of eleven at the Flagler Country School. He then began his lifetime occupation as a farmer.

They lived in the Flagler area until 1946, when they moved to a farm near Fremont for one year and then returned to the Flagler area.

In 1956 they moved to a farm north of Pella. They sold the farm which later became the site of the Christian Opportunity Center and Park View housing development. Clarence continued to farm ground near Otley, Monroe, and Knoxville until 2008. In 2000 he and Engelyn moved to a duplex at 1000 West 4th Street in Pella.

For many years he was a seed corn dealer, first selling Funk’s G Hybrids and later Moews.

He loved to sing and the hymns were always his favorite. Many times he chose a special one to sing as a witness of his faith at special events.

On November 13, 2008, he became a resident of the Pella Regional Health Center – Long Term Care. He passed away on Sunday, January 3, 2010, at the age of ninety-three.

Clarence is survived by his wife; four children and their spouses; thirteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Arie and Carolyn Ringelstein; and many nieces and nephews.
