Clara L. Flattery, 88, passed away surrounded by her loved ones at Mercy One Hospice in Johnston, Iowa on Wednesday, May 26, 2021. As a long-time resident of Des Moines, Clara will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Born in Melrose, IA, Clara graduated from Moravia High School in 1951. Following graduation, she was united in marriage to James Flattery of Albia, IA in July 1954. Clara and James moved to Des Moines, where she was employed at Bankers Life Company for a short time before starting her family. She returned to the workforce after raising seven children and was employed at Montgomery Ward and also with Sears Roebuck and Company, where she retired in 1997.

Clara and her husband resided for 57 years on the NW side of Des Moines before moving to Luther Park in 2014 and, later to Bickford of Urbandale. Clara was an active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Her greatest joy was spending time with family and, she adorned the walls of her home with pictures of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Clara is survived by her six children, Joanne (John) Anderson of Sioux Falls, SD, Janice (Brian) Cooney of Des Moines, Tom of Des Moines, Bill of Colorado Springs, CO, Jim of Des Moines, and Regina (Brandon) Keith of Ankeny; 8 Grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James; her son, Dan; her parents, William and Clara McGee; 6 brothers and 2 sisters.
