Clara Bell Burwell was born on May 11, 1939, in Boydton, VA, to Charlie Robert Moses (Robert) Burwell and Alice Rebecca Maurieta (Alice) Burwell nee Alexander. She attended public school in Washington, DC, and graduated from Dunbar High School. She attended DC Teachers College, where she studied early childhood education.

She was a devoted mother of 5 children, “her legacy” she said, Donald, Zena, Erik (Bobby), Walter, and Fola.

Clara was a devout Catholic and served as Eucharistic Minister and Lectern at her Saint Patrick’s Church parish in Rockville, Maryland. She was well-known and liked in her church community. Clara was a trailblazer in her career because shortly after finishing college, she was detailed to spearhead the implementation of Chapter 1, now Title 1, in DC Public schools. She served as President of her local AFSCME (American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees) union. She was always known for her generosity, sincerity, and amazing desserts. Clara always opened her home and heart to anyone in need. She was a second Mother to many of her children’s friends and was often greeted with “Hi Mom” by a host of children, now young adults, during her travels around the area.  

She is preceded in death by:

Three children: Walter, Donald, and Erik (Bobby). 

One brother and sister-in-law: Earl and Ruth Burwell of Orange, Virginia.

She is survived by:

Children: Zena and Fola

Eleven grandchildren: Michelle, Evan (Michael), Donald Jr. (Eddie), Cassandra, Darryl, Walter, Dominic, Rakhi, Dilan, Aiden, and Kamran. Six great-grandchildren: Nijah, Sebastian, Emily, Evianna, Elyon, and Evan Jr., and two great-great-grandchildren: Julian and Lilly.

One nephew, Gregory, and four nieces, Earlene, Jacqueline, Marguerite, and Angela.
