Christian J. Schmitt, 86, of Ottawa died Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. Mr. Schmitt was born on Aug. 3, 1924, in the Bronx, New York City, to Christian J. and Carrie (Dengler) Schmitt. He received his Bachelors Degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri.
He was employed as the City Editor at the Daily Times in Ottawa, later as the State Editor at the News-Tribune in LaSalle until his retirement. Mr. Schmitt married Mary Beth Steiman on June 7, 1952 in Dalton, Missouri. He was a member of St. Columba Church and the University of Missouri Alumni. He is survived by his wife, Mary Beth, one daughter, Catharine Suzanne Byrne, of Elgin, one son, Charles Schmitt, of Marseilles, 4 grandchildren, Christina and Chucky Schmitt, and Michael and Kevin Byrne, and two brothers, Francis (Linda) Schmitt, of Charlotte, NC, and John (Cheiko) Schmitt, of Bethlehem, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his step-mother Millie.
