Henry L. Jackson Sr. was born in Philamath, GA on October 16, 1939 to Luther and Lucy Jackson. He was baptized at Love Zion Baptist Church at an early age.
Henry graduated from East High School and soon after enlisted in the United States Air Force. During his Air Force career, he received many rewards and commendations and was promoted to through the ranks, to the highest rank an enlisted personnel can achieve, Chief Master Sergeant, due to his outstanding performance. His Conus assignments were in the states of Idaho, Texas, California, Illinois, and Ohio. His travels also took him abroad to Newfoundland, Mexico, Goose Bay Canada, England, France, Germany, Spain, Korea, Japan, Diego Garcia, Hong Kong, and the Philippines where he retired in 1985.
While in his retirement, the Chief loved having cookouts with family, planting vegetables in his garden and sitting on the dock of the bay fishing. He even has a separate car that has nothing but fishing gear everywhere and no room for anyone else to sit. Even though he was away from Ohio for years, he never lost his love for the Cleveland Browns (he got to see them win a game this year and was an avid lover of jazz. When he wasn’t doing any of those things, you could probably catch him at one of his favorite gambling spots in Las Vegas. He was always on the move.
The Chief is preceded in death by his parents, Lucy and Luther Jackson; brothers, Luther Jr. (T-Bone), Robert, and Benjamin “Bobby” Jackson; brother-in-law, Billy Barbour; sisters, Ruth Embry and Sandra Kay Wilson; grandson, Marcus Brandon VanCleaf; nephews, Timothy and Markio Washington; and his niece, Linda Jean Jackson.
He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Henry L. (Margo) Jackson, Jr.; daughters, Kimberly K. (Anthony) Morgan, Debra L. (Vernard) Jackson-Bass and Tracy L. (James) Shellow; sisters, Elizabeth Barbour and Gloria Jean Eskridge; grandchildren, Kevin Hopewell Jr, Dionna Jackson-Ross, Demario White, Kimara Morgan and Lashawna (Ron) Kelley. He also leaves 18 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild to carry on his legacy along with a host of other relatives and friends.
