Chester L. Roof, age 95, passed away on Monday, February 25, 2013 at the Alliance Community Hospital. He collapsed while walking on an errand at Copeland Oaks, his home of three years. Born in Sherrodsville, Ohio, the son of the late Alfred Loy and Catherine Flo (Sharp) Roof, Chet was a graduate of Dellroy High School. At Ohio State University, he earned a B.S. Agriculture degree, was a member of Alpha Gamma Sigma fraternity and played on the Varsity Polo Team. He was an avid supporter of OSU football and made the frequent pilgrimage to Buckeye Stadium until late in life. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a flight instructor. Soon after war’s end, in 1948, Chet moved the family to Salem to begin a career he loved until retirement 34 years later-making loans to local businesses, farmers, and home owners as Vice President of the Farmers National Bank and later Bank One. Chet’s civic and professional affiliations included member and past president of the Ohio Bankers Association, member and past president of Salem Kiwanis Club, member of the Salem Zoning Board and member and past president of the Salem Golf Club. His wife Irene (Jones) Roof preceded him in death August 22, 2003. Survivors include a son Gary Roof of Wellesley, MA; a daughter Pat Ellenwood and husband Stephan of Wellesley, MA; granddaughters Heather Elliott and Amanda Ellenwood (Omar Elorch); and great granddaughter Kira Elliott.
