Chei Min Shu was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He passed away on February 3, 2021, at the age of 89.
Chei Min was born in Singapore on December 22, 1931. At 10 years old, he started working at a shipyard, honing his lifelong curiosity and skills for building new things. At 27 years old, he moved to mainland China. There, he met the love of his life, Chun Fong, and built a life together with two daughters: Lai Kuen and Lai Ching.
In 1973, Chei Min moved to Hong Kong with his family; five years later, he immigrated with them to Chicago, USA. He forged this journey to pursue an ultimate ambition: obtaining new opportunities and better education for his daughters. In Chicago, he and his wife owned and operated a restaurant for 17 years to further support these aims.
Chei Min persevered through hardship with courage and ingenuity as he worked to build a better life for those he loved. He cultivated close friendships and a deep relationship with God. He brought happiness into strangers’ and friends’ lives alike with uplifting humor––he always had a smile to share. Chei Min’s compassionate spirit speaks to us during dark times like a beacon shining light on the way forward: where we go far by going together.
Along with his two daughters, Chei Min is survived by three grandchildren: Aaron, Natalie, and Shannon.
Chei Min will be honored in a small in-person celebration on February 10th, 2021, and a larger virtual celebration on February 27th, 2021
