Charlotte Joy Stowers of Rensselaer passed away September 6, 2013, at the age of 72, following a year long battle of lymphoma. Joy was born on August 18, 1941, to J. Truman and Iris (Davis) Sell. Joy graduated from Morocco High School in 1959 and graduated Indiana State University in 1963. In 1987, Joy completed a Master’s degree from Valparaiso University. On June 7, 1964, in Brook, IN Joy married Manly Stowers.

Joy taught in South Newton Schools for over 15 years, primarily as band director. Joy was a very active member of Brushwood United Methodist Church, where she served as an organist, Sunday school teacher, and choir director. She also worked as a substitute teacher, and band volunteer. Joy founded the Newton-Jasper Community Band in 1985 and remained involved with the group even after having a stroke in 2011.

She kept a busy schedule into her late 60’s and impacted the lives of hundreds of students over the years. She enjoyed watching sports with her family, particularly Butler University Basketball. Joy is survived by, her loving husband Manly Stowers, a daughter Karen (Wayne) Williams of Rensselaer, two sons, Mel Stowers of Rensselaer, David Stowers of Fishers, IN, two sisters Carole ( Robert) Unger of Harrisburg, PA , Carmen (Hermann) Kuebitz of Poway, CA, a brother, Jim (Joanna) Sell of Avon, IN and her father -in-law Max Stowers of Rensselaer.

One of Joy’s special honors in life was being Grandma to Kristen, Nicholas and Ryan Williams, all of Rensselaer. Joy is preceded in death by, her parents, a sister Marcia (Sell) Scott, mother-in-law Lurretta (Harrington) Stowers, and two brothers-in-law.
